What Type of Memory Card Does the Wii Use?

The Nintendo Wii offers various options for storing memory such as saved Wii channels and game progress. Besides the available memory space on the console itself, players can use SD, SDHC or GameCube memory cards.
  1. SD Memory Cards

    • Without any upgrades, the Wii console accepts SD Memory Cards that are 2 gigabytes or less. The consoles can also accommodate a miniSD or microSD card when their adapters are used. While most standard SD Memory Cards meeting these specifications will most likely be compatible, Nintendo has licensed SD Memory Cards from Bensussen Deutsch &Associates Inc. and SanDisk specifically for the Wii. Look for the official Nintendo seal when purchasing for guaranteed compatibility.

    SDHC Memory Cards

    • An SDHC Memory Card is a high capacity SD card that allows for up to 32 gigabytes of storage. To use an SDHC Memory Card with the Nintendo Wii, players must download the Wii Menu 4.0 or higher for enhanced memory storage capabilities.

    GameCube Memory Cards

    • Players that have the Nintendo GameCube can use the memory cards from that console with the Nintendo Wii. Each Wii console comes with specific GameCube Memory Card slots to store and retrieve saved data.

    Compatible File Types

    • The Nintendo Wii Photo Channel 1.0 can play certain multi-media files as long as they are compatible with the system. Compatible file types include: JPEG image files up to 8192x8192 in size, Quicktime or AVI video files, and MP3 audio files. Photo Channel 1.1 can also play MP4 and m4a audio files.

    Ordering Information

    • Licensed Nintendo Wii Memory Cards can be purchased online at Nintendo.com or through any retailer that sells Nintendo Wii products.
