Predecessors
Nintendo released the video game consoles Nintendo 64 in 1996 and Nintendo GameCube in 2001 prior to releasing the Nintendo Wii in 2006.
Popularity
During its release in the same time period as the Xbox and PS3, the Nintendo Wii was the most popular console due to its cheaper price when compared to the other two competing consoles.
Console Feature
In addition to playing Nintendo Wii and GameCube games, the Nintendo Wii also has Wi-Fi capability that allows game players to challenge other players with the same game via the Internet.
Wii Games
The Nintendo Wii has continued popular games in the Nintendo franchise, such as Super Smash Bros. Brawl and Mario Galaxy. Nintendo has had success bringing back former titles and reinventing them with better graphics and game play.
Successor
With the trend of releasing a new video game console every five years (64 in 1996, GameCube in 2001 and Wii in 2006), talks have been made about the next generation that Nintendo plans to release in 2011.
