How to Connect the Wii to a USB Modem

Connecting the Nintendo Wii to Nintendo&'s Internet service has many benefits. Quite a few Wii games have an online feature, allowing players to compete with their friends no matter where they are. Gamers who would like to play a classic console game or two can do so with a download from the Nintendo Shop Channel. But to do things like this, the Wii must establish a connection to the Internet. Even if you don&'t have a wireless router, the Wii can still be connected with a wired modem and a Wii LAN Adapter.

Insert an Ethernet cable into your broadband modem. Turn off the power to the modem for about 90 seconds if it is currently in use. Turn the power back on.

Connect the Wii LAN Adapter to the Wii&'s USB port, located on the back of the system. Do this while power to the system is off.

Plug the Ethernet cable from your modem into the Ethernet port on the Wii LAN Adapter. Turn on the Wii.

Connect to the Internet. Go to the Wii&'s main menu and click the circular “Wii” icon found on the bottom-left of the screen. Choose “Wii Settings,” then go to Page 2. Select “Internet,” then choose “Connection Settings.” Three empty connection slots appear that all say “None.” Choose the first one, then select “Wired Connection.” Hit “OK,” and the system tests the connection with your modem.

Update your Wii. Once connected to the Internet, the system detects whether you have the latest update. If you do not, you are prompted to download it. Select “yes.” The Wii is now ready to use the available online features.
