How to Connect a Wii to an Old TV

Included with the Nintendo Wii is a set of standard AV (audio/video) cables. Most older TVs (being full sized, non-HD sets) produced within the last 20 years come with AV ports. AV ports are the colored inputs on the back or on the side of the TV. While the Wii will function and look OK on a standard definition TV, it won&'t look as good as it would on a HDTV with progressive scan capabilities. If your TV does not have AV inputs and you have a VCR or DVD player connected to it, you can use the AV inputs on either device.

Instructions

TV

  Connect the AC adapter into the "DC 12V In" port on the back of the Nintendo Wii. Plug the other end into an available wall outlet.

  Connect the AV Multi Out (the square shaped connector on the opposite side of the colored RCA cables) into the AV port on the back of the Nintendo Wii.

  Insert the RCA cables into the corresponding inputs on your TV (e.g. red prong into red port and yellow prong into yellow port).

  Turn the Wii on. Turn the TV on. Set the TV to its "Video" mode (it might also be titled "Input" or something similar). You will know when you&'re on the right mode when you see the Wii Channel Menu on the screen.
VCR or DVD

  Connect the AC adapter into the "DC 12V In" port on the back of the Nintendo Wii. Plug the other end into an available wall outlet.

  Connect the AV Multi Out (the square shaped connector on the opposite side of the colored RCA cables) into the AV port on the back of the Nintendo Wii.

  Insert the RCA cables into the corresponding inputs on your VCR/DVD player (e.g. red prong into red port and yellow prong into yellow port).

  Turn the Wii on. Turn the TV on. Set the TV to its "Video" mode (it might also be titled "Input" or something similar). Turn the VCR/DVD player on. Set the VCR/DVD player to its "Input" mode (it might also be titled "AV Mode"). Some VCRs require you to insert the tape and stop it before you can select the proper input mode.
