How to Connect a Wii to an LCD

While the Nintendo Wii is not capable of high resolution display (compared to other HDMI capable gaming consoles), the Wii does support progressive scan via the use of component cables. A component connection will look better on an LCD TV than the standard AV connection. Almost all LCD TVs have component inputs and support the 480p progressive scan capabilities of the Nintendo Wii.

Instructions

    • 1

Insert the AC adapter into the "DC 12V In" port on the back of the Nintendo Wii. Plug the other end into an available wall outlet. Leave the Nintendo Wii off.

    • 2

Connect the rectangular side of the component cable into the "AV Out" port on the back of the Nintendo Wii. The component cable has two sets of plugs: one for video and one for audio. They are clearly labeled on the component cable itself. Do not confuse the red audio plug with the red video plug (red is the only color that overlaps).

    • 3

Insert the colored video component cables into their corresponding ports on the back of the LCD TV. For example, the blue prong into the blue port and the green prong into the green port. They will be clearly colored and labeled on most TVs. Insert the red and white audio component cables into the standard AV ports on the back of the LCD TV. There is no need to insert the yellow audio cable.

    • 4

Connect the sensor bar to the back of the Nintendo Wii. Position the sensor bar so that is facing you (ideally, on top of or below the TV).

    • 5

Turn the Nintendo Wii and the LCD TV on. On the LCD TV, select the "Component" video display mode (usually done in the same way you would select standard AV mode). Once you&'re on the right display mode, you will see the Nintendo Wii Channel menu.

Select the "Wii" icon at the bottom-left. Select "Wii System Settings." Select "Screen." Select "TV Resolution" and choose the "EDTV or HDTV (480p)" option. Select "Confirm."
