How to Use a Nintendo GameCube Controller on a Wii

The Nintendo Wii offers gamers the ability to play games from an older Nintendo system with the GameCube controller. Some Wii games, such as Mario Kart Wii, also offer this option, but most Wii games require the Wii remote. A GameCube controller provides a more traditional video game controller layout and thus makes it easier to play certain games.

Instructions

    • 1

Open the top panel of the Wii console. Connect the GameCube controller into the first GameCube port.

    • 2

Insert a game into the Wii. Use the Wii remote to select and start the game from the main Wii menu.

    • 3

Use either the analog stick or the D-pad to navigate up, down, left and right through a game's menus. Press the "A" button to make a selection. Press the "B" button to go back to the previous screen.

    • 4

Use the provided on-screen controls guide to play a downloaded game originally from an older system, such as the Super Nintendo Entertainment System. A GameCube game uses the same controls as when played on the GameCube.
