How to Troubleshoot a Nintendo Wii Disk Scratch Problem

The Nintendo Wii home video gaming system allows users access to many innovative games that make use of the console's motion-control functionality. However, if disc-based games become scratched or damaged, they can become unplayable. If this happens, there are a few troubleshooting and disc maintenance steps that can be taken to get your games back in working order.

Instructions

    • 1

Test the game in a friend's Wii console. If the game works in another console but not yours, the problem is with the console, not the disc. Contact Nintendo to arrange a repair or replacement.

    • 2

Clean the game disc with a clean, lint-free cloth lightly moistened with glass cleaner or rubbing alcohol. Grasp the game disc by the edges, making sure not to touch the unmarked read surface on the bottom of the disc. Clean in straight lines from the disc's center hole to the outer edge, never in circular motions.

Inspect the disc after thorough cleaning. If the disc still has marks, these may be scratches that require professional resurfacing to repair. A disc resurfacing company can fix these discs, unless the scratches are so deep that they show through to the label side. Such scratches have penetrated the data layer of the disc and cannot be repaired; the disc must be replaced.
