How to Connect My Wii to My Lapotop to Use That Screen

The Nintendo Wii, released in 2006, uses a variety of motion controllers that players movie in lieu of traditional hand-held game pads. Popular games on the system include "Wii Sports," "Mario Galaxy" and "Metroid Prime 3: Corruption." If you do a bit of traveling and don't always have a television available, you can hook up the Nintendo Wii, along with most other video game systems that emit a standard definition video signal, to a laptop screen using an XGA converter.

Things You'll Need

Instructions

    • 1

Connect the Nintendo Wii's audio/video output to the XGA converter's audio/video input via the RCA cables. The cables will be color-coded and require that you simply match up the appropriate colors on the two devices.

      A standard VGA input

Connect the XGA converter's video output to the laptop's video input using the corresponding cable. You have two options here: S-video or VGA. S-video is less expensive but does not transfer sound and offers only blurry video. VGA does not transfer sound either, but transfers much sharper images.

Place the Wii's motion capture bar, which looks like a long, skinny speaker, atop the laptop screen. You may need to tape it down. This bar is what captures the signals from your Wii remote when playing the game. However, if you are using a standard GameCube controller, you do not need to place the motion capture bar.

Power on both the Nintendo Wii and the laptop, which should prompt the Nintendo Wii's images to start playing on the laptop screen. To get back to your normal desktop simply disconnect the XGA converter from the laptop. You will still need to use the standard Wii controllers, as the laptop screen will function only as a monitor and not the Wii device itself.
