Different Wii Consoles

Much like other seventh-generation home gaming consoles, the Nintendo Wii comes in more than one variety. Just as Microsoft has Xbox 360 Pro and Elite models, and Sony has the Playstation 3 original and slim models, Nintendo has a number of different Wii versions.

  1. Original Wii

    • The original Nintendo Wii was released November 19, 2006. The console and accessories are all colored white, and the system comes with a free game: "Wii Sports."

    White Wii(post-2010)

    • In March 2010, a new type of Wii was discovered by the Wii Drive Chip Database. This Wii has a DVD drive that is much smaller than the DVD drive on the Wiis released before 2010. This makes for a much lighter version of the Wii than before.

    Black Wii

    • The "Black Wii" was released by Nintendo on May 9, 2010, only two weeks before the release of Nintendo's newest Wii game, "Super Mario Galaxy 2." Aside from the black color, the Black Wii is technically identical to the post-2010 white Wii.
