How to Make a Wii Play a DVD

The Nintendo Wii DVD drive can play DVD game discs but has been crippled by Nintendo so that it can not play DVD movies. You can alter the Wii's operating system to let it play DVDs, providing that the Wii has first been modified (or "modded") through software so that programs not sanctioned by Nintendo can be installed on it. You will need to use a Windows-based computer and an SD memory card to transfer free programs created by Wii enthusiasts to the Wii.

Things You'll Need

Instructions

    • 1

Remove the SD memory card from the SD memory card slot on the Wii. Insert the SD memory card into the slot on the SD memory card reader.

    • 2

Plug the SD memory card cable into a USB port on the computer. Wait for the icon of the SD memory card to appear on the desktop of the computer.

    • 3

Download the MPlayer Wii DVD player program from a Wii modification website, for example, the Wiibrew website (see Resources). Double-click on the file once it has downloaded to decompress it to a folder on the desktop.

    • 4

Double-click on the folder to open its window. Drag the "Apps" folder from inside the window onto the icon of the SD memory card.

    • 5

Click "Yes" when a confirmation window appears asking to merge the copy with an existing "Apps" folder. Wait for the "Apps" folder to completely copy to the SD memory card.

    • 6

Right-click on the icon of the SD memory card. Select "Eject" from the pop-up menu. Remove the SD memory card cable form the USB port of the computer. Remove the SD memory card from the SD memory card reader.

    • 7

Insert the SD memory card into the SD memory card slot on the Wii. Turn the Wii on.

    • 8

Insert a DVD movie into the Wii's DVD on the front.

    • 9

Select the "Home-brew" channel from the Wii's Home menu. Click on the "Start" button in the new window that appears using the Wii remote.

    • 10

Press the right arrow on the Wii remote direction pad to move through three screens. Stop moving when you see the "MPlayer" program in a text box on the screen.

    • 11

Select the text box with the Wii remote. Select the "Start" button on the new window that appears.

    • 12

Wait as the MPlayer program loads into the Wii. Scroll down to "Open" in the new screen that appears. Click the "A" button on the Wii remote.

    • 13

Select "DVD Video" on the new screen that appears. Press the "A" button on the Wii remote.
