How to Troubleshoot a Wii Nunchuk

The Wii console uses two main controllers for most Wii games, the standard Wii remote and the extension known as the Wii Nunchuk. The Nunchuk attaches to the bottom of the Wii remote and features an analog stick and two trigger buttons on the top. While using the remote, wear and tear or irresponsible storage could cause some problems, but in most cases the Nunchuk problems are easy to solve and repair.

Make sure that the Nunchuk is properly connected to the Wii remote. The remote plugs into the metal input area on the bottom of the remote. To ensure the Nunchuk is fully plugged in, listen for a clicking sound when you insert it.

Untangle the Nunchuk cable. During active games like Wii sports, the Nunchuk̵7;s long cable can easily become tangled and twist around. The twisting can put a lot of pressure on internal cables and cause less response time or even damage the cables. Unplug the Nunchuk and let the cable hang down to get the twists out naturally. If some remain, slowly untwist the cable by hand until it is straight again.

Unclog sticky buttons by performing Nintendo.com̵7;s recommended cleaning. According to the official Wii manual, the Nunchuk should be cleaned with an old toothbrush and warm water. Wet the toothbrush with warm water and gently shake out any excess drops so the toothbrush is damp. Slowly brush around the Nunchuk̵7;s buttons and analog stick. Let the Nunchuk dry for a few hours before it is used again.

Check the Wii remote battery level by pressing the house button on the Wii remote. The Nunchuk gets its power from the Wii remote, so a low battery performance could be affecting the functions of the Nunchuk. Replace the batteries to see if the Nunchuk operations improve.

Try using a different Nunchuk in the same Wii remote. The connection port may be damaged on the Wii Remote or the Nunchuk, causing the Nunchuk not to work. By using another Nunchuk, you can see if the problem lies with the Nunchuk or the Wii Remote.
