How to Troubleshoot a Wii That Won't Turn On

A video game console is an investment. Between the cost of the console, extra controllers and games, you're liable to dish out a pretty penny to keep your game library fresh and fun. But if your Nintendo Wii won't turn on, you can't use those pricey controllers and games until you fix it. Troubleshooting a Wii that won't turn on is easy and often doesn't require a call to Nintendo tech support for repair or replacement.

Instructions

    • 1

Unplug the AC adapter from the power outlet and the Wii console. Nintendo suggests waiting two full minutes before reconnecting. While you wait, check the adapter for torn or frayed wires. If the adapter is damaged in any way, don't use it; instead, seek a replacement.

    • 2

Check to make sure the adapter is an authentic Nintendo product. Both "Wii" and "RVL-002 (USA)" will be molded onto the body of the adapter. Nintendo recommends using only Nintendo-brand adapters to power the console, since the Nintendo Wii isn't designed to support third-party power adapters.

    • 3

Disconnect any peripherals connected to your Nintendo Wii console. This includes controllers, USB devices and other console add-ons. Sometimes third-party products and peripherals can cause the console to malfunction.

    • 4

Check the wall outlet and make sure the issue isn't with that instead of your Wii. Try connecting another device to the outlet or, if using a surge protector, make sure that it's on and plugged into a working outlet completely. Also, if using a surge protector, check it for any wear or damage.

    • 5

Clear space around your Nintendo Wii so it can breathe. Game consoles generate a lot of heat. If they get too hot, they may shut down as a safety measure. Make sure all of the console vents are clear of dust and obstruction. If they're overly dusty, wipe the dust away using a cloth or push it out using quick bursts from a can of compressed air.

    • 6

Check your Nintendo Wii carefully for cracking or any physical damage. Sometimes physical damage will cause a console to malfunction.

    • 7

Reconnect the power adapter to the back of the Wii console. Then plug it into a working wall outlet. Try it now and see if it works.
