How to Update Wiikey 1.9B

To unlock the full potential of your first generation Wiikey, you'll need to update to the final firmware build, 1.9s. Firmware 1.9s will allow your Wii to play dual-layer game backups. Firmware 1.9s also gives you the option of preventing Wii games from loading system updates, keeping you from accidentally bricking your Wii by installing an update from the wrong region. All of the Wiikey's original features remain, including the ability to play region-free disks and alter the disk drive's read speed. Thanks to clever planning on the part of the Wiikey development team, this is a relatively simple update.

Things You'll Need

PC with DVD burner
WinRAR or another RAR archive extractor
Two blank DVDs
GameCube controller

Instructions

  Download and install ImgBurn on your PC. You can find the download link in the resources section of this article.

  Download the Wiikey 1.9s firmware update disk and configuration disk. The download links are included in the resources section of this article. Be sure to download the proper disk for your region.

  Extract the .iso file from the update disk .RAR file. Launch ImgBurn, select the update disk .iso file, insert a blank DVD into your DVD burner and click the burn button.

  Repeat Step 3 with the .iso file from the configuration disk .RAR file.

  Insert the update disk into your Wii and power it on. Your disk channel should register a GameCube disk. Launch the disk channel.

  Use your GameCube to navigate the update menu. Press "A" to test your system, "A" again to move to the update screen, and "A" to perform the update. Press "A" again when the update is complete to restart your Wii. Eject the update disk. Do not power off your Wii while the Wiikey is updating.

  Insert the configuration disk and load the disk channel. Using the GameCube controller select your desired settings from the configuration menu, save them and restart your Wii. Your Wiikey is now fully updated and prepared to handle dual-layer games and block updates.
