How to Find the WEP Key for the Wii

WEP is a security setting on your wireless router that is used to protect your home network when you connect to the Internet. If WEP is turned on for your wireless network, you'll need to enter the WEP Key into the Wii's settings in order to connect your Wii to the Internet. You can play Wii games without an Internet connection, but many of the Wii's features, including downloading games and playing against other gamers online, require Internet connectivity.

Things You'll Need

  • Nintendo Wii console
  • Wii remote
  • Computer with Internet access
  • Wireless router configured to access the Internet using WEP security

Instructions

    • 1

On your computer, log in to your router's "Internet Settings."

    • 2

Under the Internet Settings, look for a "Wireless" or "Wireless Security" setting.

    • 3

Look for the WEP Key field. Many routers have settings for four WEP keys. The Wii will only work with the WEP Key in the first position.

    • 4

Carefully write down the WEP Key. It will be a long, alphanumeric string.

    • 5

On the Wii main menu, click on the Wii button on the bottom left of the screen to access the Wii Settings. Then click "Internet" and "Connection Settings." Look for "WEP" to input and save your WEP key on the Wii.
