How to Mod the Nintendo Wii

The popularity of the Nintendo Wii makes some owners want to modify, or "mod," it to do things Nintendo never intended. Modding the Nintendo Wii will let the Wii use games made by other owners and do things that were not included in the operating system. The modification involves installing a solderless chip onto the Wii̵7;s circuit board, which, thanks to the way the Wii is made, can be done without having to do any physical alteration of the Wii. In fact, modding the Wii can be accomplished by anyone willing to open the console.

Things You'll Need

  • Phillips jeweler's screwdriver

Instructions

  1. Opening The Nintendo Wii

    • 1

Put the soft cloth down on a table. Remove all of the cables from the Wii and put it down face-up horizontally on the soft cloth. Look at the serial number on the back. Purchase the a solderless mod chip that matches the serial number from a Wii parts-supply store.

    • 2

Turn the Wii over and place it face-down on the soft cloth. Remove the silver screw from the bottom with the Phillips jeweler's screwdriver. Remove the battery compartment. Turn the Wii back face-up and put it down on the soft cloth. Insert the flat edged jeweler's screwdriver between the rubber foot on the back of the case and remove it. Use the flat-edged jeweler's screwdriver to remove the three white stickers from the back of the case. Remove all of the screws from the back using the Phillips jeweler's screwdriver.

    • 3

Put the Wii down on the soft towel on its right side. Use the flat-edged screwdriver to remove the two rubber feet and the two stickers near the faceplate. Remove all of the screws now exposed with the flat-edged jeweler's screwdriver.

    • 4

Put the Wii back upright on the soft cloth. Remove the two socket covers by wiggling them. Use the Phillips jeweler's screwdriver to remove the screws from inside of the socket covers. Pull off the faceplate from the Wii and remove the wire connected to the faceplate by pulling it off the faceplate. Remove the black plate from inside of the two socket covers. Remove the screws from behind the black plate with the Phillips jeweler's screwdriver.

    • 5

Place the Wii on its left side. Wiggle the right-side cover off of the case. Remove the screws surrounding and on top of the DVD drive using the Phillips jeweler's screwdriver. Lift the DVD drive up and remove the two wires connected to it. The wire with the plug can be pulled straight off while the circuit-strip connector must have the brown latch released with your fingernail first before being pulled off. Remove the DVD drive and put it aside.

    Installiing The Mod Chip

    • 6

Locate the two computer chips to the right of the space where the DVD drive was removed. Remove the solderless mod chip from its packaging and place it on top of the smaller computer chip so that it lines up and fits snugly on top of the chip.

    • 7

Punch out the square in the piece of cardboard that comes with the solderless mod chip. Place the piece of cardboard over the solderless mod chip so that it lines up and can fit on top of it. Push the piece of cardboard down on the solderless mod chip.

    • 8

Replace the DVD drive to its position on the inside of the Wii. Reattach the two wires. Screw the DVD drive back down using the Phillips jeweler's screwdriver.

    • 9

Reassemble the Nintendo Wii. Reattach all of the cables. Turn the Nintendo Wii on to see a modification screen display that shows that the Nintendo Wii has been modded.
