How to Chip Mod a Nintendo Wii

The popularity of the Nintendo Wii game console has tempted users to modify the system to play a wider variety of games or otherwise enhance the console's functions. The process involves putting a new chip onto the Wii's motherboard and is called "modding." Using a chip that doesn't need to be soldered to the Wii is the most practical way to do this. The procedure is fairly simple, takes a bit of patience and will take about an hour to complete.

Things You'll Need

  • Solderless Wii mod chip
  • Phillips screwdriver
  • Jeweler's Phillips screwdriver

Pull out the power cord and any audio and video cables from the Wii. Put the Wii down on a work surface upside down.
Use the Phillips screwdriver to remove the small silver screw from the battery compartment. Remove the battery compartment and put it aside.

    • 2

Pull off the rubber foot by the battery compartment. Pull off the three lettered stickers on the bottom of the Wii.
Use the Phillips screwdriver to remove the screws that were hidden beneath the rubber foot and under the stickers. Put the screws aside.
Remove the screws from the top side and bottom side of the Wii with the Phillips screwdriver.

Turn the Wii right side up and remove the two rubber feet and the two stickers that are on the faceplate. Use the Phillips screwdriver to remove the screws hidden beneath the rubber feet and under the stickers. Put the screws aside.
Stand up the Wii so it is vertical. Remove the two socket covers by wiggling them loose. Use the Phillips screwdriver to remove the screws from the black plate that can now be seen.
Slowly pull the faceplate off of the Wii's case. Pull off the red wire connected to the faceplate. Put the faceplate aside.

Put the Wii back down on the work surface on its left side. Pull off the right side of the cover.
Use the Jeweler's Phillips screwdriver to remove the four screws surrounding the DVD driver. Put the screws aside

Lift up the DVD drive. Remove one of the wires connected to it by giving it a quick pull. Remove the other wire by first releasing the small latch attached to it and then pulling it off. Put the DVD drive aside.

    • 6

Use the jeweler's Phillips screwdriver to remove the screws from around the hard drive plate cover that is situated next to the two integrated circuit chips that are by themselves at one side. Put the screws aside. Remove the hard drive plate cover and put it away.
Position the solderless mod chip over the smaller IC chip. Press down on the solderless mod chip to seat it on top of the smaller IC chip.

Take the cardboard cover shield that came with the solderless mod chip and position the hole in it over the smaller IC chip. Place the cardboard cover shield down and on top of the smaller IC chip so that it fits over the solderless mod chip. Push the cardboard cover shield down so that it sits snugly around the solderless mod chip.
