How to Connect the Wii Video Component Adapter Through a Receiver

While your Nintendo Wii comes packaged with all the cables necessary to plug into a television and get playing, sophisticated gamers may find themselves wanting more. Specifically, the higher resolution and picture quality of a component video connection, or the option to run Wii on the same television as other consoles or media devices. That's where a component adapter comes in--and the process of connecting that adapter to an AV (Audio/Video) receiver.

Things You'll Need

  • HDTV or EDTV compatible television
  • Nintendo Wii
  • Component video adapter for Nintendo Wii
  • A/V receiver with component video input

Instructions

  1. Connecting to the Receiver

    • 1

Turn off your television. If you run your receiver's audio through a separate stereo, set it to your receiver's channel and set the volume low.

    • 2

Plug the component video cable into the A/V port of your Nintendo Wii.

    • 3

Connect the Wii's green, blue and red video cables to the green, blue and red component video input ports of your receiver. This may be labeled "component video," "Y/Pb/Pr" or "Y/Cb/Cr."

    • 4

Connect the Wii's red and white audio cables to the red and white audio input ports located next to the component video ports on your receiver.

    • 5

Turn on your Nintendo Wii. Turn on your television and set it to the channel you use for your A/V receiver.

    • 6

Cycle through the inputs on your receiver until your Wii's picture is displayed on screen. Turn up the volume on your stereo so the Wii's audio is audible.

    Changing Wii Settings

    • 7

Open your Nintendo Wii's "Wii Channel" menu by pointing your WiiMote at the "Wii" button in the lower-left corner of the screen and pressing "A."

    • 8

Open "System Settings" by pointing your WiiMote at the "Wrench" icon and pressing "A."

    • 9

Use your WiiMote to select "Screen." Click "Confirm," then "Widescreen."

    • 10

Use your WiiMote to select "EDTV or HDTV (480P)." This tells your Wii to operate in the higher quality afforded by your component video cable and A/V receiver.

    • 11

Click "Confirm" twice more to finish setting your Nintendo Wii to operate on your HDTV.
