Basic Cleaning with Household Items
You can clean your Wii games by using inexpensive household items. If you can get a static-free cloth to clean the CD's surface this would be best. However, any soft cloth similar to T-shirt material can be used. Isopropyl alcohol makes an ideal cleaner. If you don't have isopropyl alcohol, you can also use regular soapy water. Do not use household cleaners as some of the chemicals may damage the disc's surface. When cleaning, stroke the disc from the center hole out toward the edge of the disc, never around in a circle.
Cleaning with CD and DVD Cleaning Kits
If you feel that you need a more professional cleaning method, commercially available CD and DVD cleaning kits can also be used to clean your Wii CDs. Cleaning kits vary in design and price. Some may include a spray and cloth that can be used similar to the basic household cleaners. Others provide special cleaning wipes that you use once and then throw away. Still other kits are actually small machines that allow you to spray your disc and insert them into a slot for an automatic clean.
Scratch Removal Options
Nothing is more devastating than when a favorite Wii game becomes scratched to the point that it can no longer be played. A scratch on the reflective bottom of the disc disrupts the laser's ability to read the data, causing skipping or making the game unbootable. Depending on the severity of the scratch, these Wii CDs can sometimes be salvaged.
You can buy disc buffing wheels or machines at electronics stores. These remove scratches by taking layers of the coating off the bottom of the disc. While this does work for some shallow scratches, removing the protective CD coating may lead to other issues as the disc ages. A better option is to take your Wii CD to be professionally resurfaced. Some locations such as GameStop, Hollywood Video and Game Crazy offer CD resurfacing for a low per-disc fee.
