How to Troubleshoot a GameCube Wii Controller

Over the years, Nintendo has made several gaming systems that are not backwards compatible with its older systems (meaning you can't play the old games on the new system). However, the Nintendo Wii does allow you to play some older GameCube games and even connect the older GameCube controllers. If you are using a GameCube controller on the Wii and it isn't functioning properly, you need to perform a few troubleshooting steps.

Instructions

    • 1

Power on the Nintendo Wii and your television.

    • 2

Check the cable connection between the Nintendo Wii and the GameCube controller. The cable running out of the controller needs to be completely inserted into the controller port. If not, it isn't going to function properly.

    • 3

Remove the cable connection from the first cable port, then plug it into a different controller port. Occasionally controller ports can fail on you, so changing the port can correct the issue.

    • 4

Plug in a different GameCube controller into the Nintendo Wii system. Some controllers, if not used for an extended period of time, can begin to fail.

    • 5

Use only official Nintendo controllers. Third party controllers may not work on the Nintendo Wii.
