How to Play Back-Up Discs on Wii

Nintendo Wii games can cost over $50 to purchase new and just one scratch can ruin the whole game. Instead of risking scratches on an original game disc, you can use a burned backup copy of your own Wii game. These games will not load directly on the Wii Disc Channel, so you must use a special application through the Wii Homebrew Channel to play those games.

Things You'll Need

  • Backed up game disc
  • SD Card
  • SD Card Reader
  • Wii Homebrew Channel
  • Wii Gator
  • Wii Backup Launcher

Instructions

    • 1

Insert your SD card into your computer. Format the card by going to "My Computer," right-clicking on the SD card and selecting "Format...."

    • 2

Download the BannerBomb and HackMii installation files to the root of the SD card. They are available from links on the Wiibrew.org "Homebrew Channel" page. (See "References.") Make sure that the HackMii installation file is labeled as "Boot.elf" before removing your SD card.

    • 3

Insert the SD card into your Wii and use the Wii remote to select the SD card channel. Wait for the SD card to automatically load. When the card does load, a message should pop up on the screen. Click "Yes."

    • 4

Follow the on-screen prompts to install the Homebrew Channel, DVDX and Boot Mii onto your Nintendo Wii.

    • 5

Restart your Nintendo Wii when the installation is completed. Remove the SD card and reinsert the SD card into your computer.

    • 6

Download and add the Wii Gator application to your SD card. Find the files at GBATemp.net. (See "References" below.) Make sure that the application is copied into the "Apps" folder on the SD card.

    • 7

Insert the card into your Nintendo Wii. Use the remote to start the "Homebrew Channel" and run the "CMOS Updater." Follow the on-screen prompts and restart the Nintendo Wii once the installation is completed.

    • 8

Insert your backup copy of a Nintendo Wii game. Load the "Homebrew Channel" and then click on the "Backup Launcher" program. Press the "B" button on your remote and the Nintendo Wii will automatically restart.

    • 9

Use the remote to select the "Wii Disc Channel." Wait a minute for the game to load and then click the "Start" button. Loading time may take a little longer with backup discs. Wait for the game to load completely and then play it.
