Zombie Games for the Nintendo Wii

Zombies are among the most popular monsters in film and literature. They're mindless creatures driven by a primal, cannibalistic need, which is a perfect metaphor for people who don't want to be absorbed into mass culture. Ironically, this, in turn, drives the zombie genre to more platforms, like Nintendo Wii. There are a few zombie games for the Wii that put you in the shoes of someone defending themselves from an onslaught of Zombies. Generally, these aren't games for kids; between intense violence and coarse language, kids should look elsewhere.
  1. House of the Dead: Overkill

    • Fans of Robert Rodriguez's Grindhouse offering, Planet Terror, may feel right at home with this campy on-rails shooter. Borrowing heavily from the '50s B-movie era that Rodriguez was, this game has a great sense of humor and a self-aware style. Combining a hilarious dialogue between the mysterious Agent G and loose-cannon Detective Isaac Washington, with a very solid light-gun style of play, this game tells the story of the unlikely partnership between the two lawmen, and a story of revenge for the latter against Papa Caesar, the mastermind of the zombie invasion. Point your Wii remote at the screen and shoot oncoming hordes of undead, as the game leads you through several levels of mayhem. Beware also of the language, which is profuse--especially from the Samuel L Jackson Wanna-be, Washington.

House of the Dead 2 &3 Return

    • Part of the same series as Overkill (see above), this title takes fans back to the days of the Dreamcast and arcade House of the Dead games. This is a two-for-one deal, which gives you six levels each of zombies attacking, and is also a light gun, on-rails shooter. This is a title more apt for hardcore zombie fans, and fans of retro titles, as the graphics and voice acting are considerably poorer quality (almost hilariously so, in some cases) than those on a more modern system, and the game play is a lot more challenging than the Wii original, Overkill.

    Onechanbara: Bikini Zombie Slayers

    • If you're looking for story and high-quality gameplay, you may want to look somewhere else. If you're looking for a mindless game with sexy women dismembering zombies with katana swords, then Onechanbara may be the right series for you. You will be hacking and slashing your way through waves of undead as one of the pretty ladies for which the game is known. The controls are slightly awkward, but overall it's a rewarding game at a lower price than most.

Dead Rising: Chop 'til you Drop

    • Having made a huge splash on the XBox, Dead Rising was ported to the Wii console and toned down a little for the Wii's lower visual capabilities. You play as Frank West, a freelance journalist trapped in a mall during the zombie uprising, surviving by grabbing anything you can get your hands on, and dismembering zombies with it. If you've ever wondered whether or not a patio umbrella would make a viable weapon, you will likely find out at some point in this game. Fans of the XBox version may be disappointed, but newcomers to the series will likely enjoy the game immensely.

    Rock of the Dead

    • Slated for release in the latter half of 2010 at the time of this writing, the game is an interesting twist, combining Guitar Hero with House of the Dead. As zombies shuffle toward your screen, you have a few seconds to play a guitar riff on your Activision or Guitar Hero controller, which fires energy toward the enemies and destroys them. It's a challenging game, and takes a little more getting used to, especially for people who play Guitar Hero and Rock Band often. The game also promises a great sense of humor and a rewarding two-player mode.
