How to Connect to Wii From a PC

The Nintendo Wii gaming system connects to a television or home theater AV receiver using composite yellow, white and red audio-video cables. When someone else is watching TV, it may be desirable to hook up the Wii to a different device, such as a computer, for playing games. Although you can connect composite cables to a computer equipped with a video card, the displayed image on the PC monitor may be unstable due to the scanning rate of the Wii, which differs from the scanning rate of most computer monitors. A simpler solution is an adapter that gets the Wii signal into the computer with a USB cable connection.

Things You'll Need

Instructions

    • 1

Disconnect the Wii power cord and unplug the audio-video cable from the back of the Wii and the television.

    • 2

Place the Wii gaming console close enough to the computer that the cable adapter will reach between the two components.

    • 3

Insert the proprietary Wii plug on the adapter into the jack on the back of the gaming system. The plug inserts in one direction only; don't try to force it into the jack.

    • 4

Insert the USB plug attached to the other end of the adapter cable into a free USB port on the computer.

    • 5

Plug the DC power cable into the jack on the Wii and connect the other end to an electrical outlet.

    • 6

Turn on the Wii and the computer. Use the mouse to double-click the USB drive connecting the PC to the Wii. On a Windows computer, click the "Start" button, then select "My Computer" and double-click the displayed drive for the Wii. On a Mac, an icon should appear on the desktop labeled for the USB connection.
