How to Play WMV on Wii

Unlike Wii's competitor's, the system does not allow players to play CDs or DVD movies on the system. The equipment is there to play the files, but an application is needed to actually let them play. Independent programmers have created their own media player for the Wii that will play WMV files, but it requires several steps before they can actually be played.

Things You'll Need

  • SD card
  • Wii Homebrew Channel
  • Wireless Internet connection
  • MPlayer Wii software

Instructions

    • 1

Install the "Homebrew Channel" on your Nintendo Wii. This channel can be downloaded to an SD card and accessed on your regular Wii menu after the installation has completed.

    • 2

Turn on your wireless router so that the Wii has an active Internet connection. You can also directly connect your Wii to the Internet through a LAN line.

    • 3

Load the "Homebrew Channel" and access the "Homebrew Browser." Click "Yes" at the message that pops up and install any updates that are needed.

    • 4

Wait for the main menu to load and click on the "Browse" icon to find applications. Click on the "Media Player" tab at the top of the screen. Scroll down until you find the "MPlayer Wii."

    • 5

Click on the "Download" link and wait for the download to complete. Once the download has completed, exit out of the "Homebrew Channel" and remove the SD card from the Wii.

    • 6

Insert the SD card into a computer. Transfer the WMV movie files to the media folder located on the SD card.

    • 7

Insert the SD card back into the Wii and load the "Homebrew Channel." Click on the media player and wait for it to load. Use the Wii Remote to select files from the list and then play the files in the media player.

    • 8

Click on the small square icon in the bottom right-hand corner to turn it to a full-screen full. Use the "B" button on the Wii remote to return to a normal view.

    • 9

Repeat the SD card process to add and watch different media files on the Wii.
