How to Set Up a Network on a Wii Console

The Nintendo Wii by itself is a fun device to play games. But the console offers even more once you set it up with a wireless network. It has a built-in wireless network adapter that allows you to connect to the Internet over a broadband connection. Once connected, you can browse the web, download new updates and features to your console, chat online and check email and social networking sites.

Make sure that your Internet connect is running smoothly. Check the modem and the router and make sure the green lights are all lit up.

    • 2

      Turn on the Wii console.

    • 3

Select "Wii Options." Locate this on the bottom left of the screen. It is the button with the Wii logo.

    • 4

You will find a new screen with choices for Data Management or Wii Settings. Select "Wii Settings" on the right.

    • 5

You will be given four options: "Console Nickname," "Calender," "Screen" and "Sound." Click forward to the second menu screen using the blue arrow to the right.

    • 6

Another menu screen gives you four more selections to choose from: "Parental Controls," "Sensor Bar," "Internet" and "WiiConnect 24." Select "Internet."

    • 7

      Select "Connection Settings."

    • 8

You will now be given two options: "Wireless" or "Wired" connection. Choose "Wireless."

    • 9

Next select "Search for an Access Point." A screen will appear telling you to choose the access point you want to connect to. Select "Yes."

    • 10

Th Wii will now search for a wireless network. It will display a list of available networks. Networks that are identified with a closed padlock require passwords to join.

    • 11

Find your wireless network in the list and select it. If your wireless network is password-protected, input the password or key and click "OK." Save these settings when prompted.

    • 12

The system will then prompt you to start a "Connection Test." Select "OK."

    • 13

Wait for the Wii to connect to your wireless network. This may take some time. You may want to download any necessary updates. A good option is to go to the Wii Shop channel and download the Internet Channel, which is free.
