How to Activate a Wii Controller

Nintendo calls its Wii controller a Wii remote. Nintendo Wii owners tend to call the thing a "Wiimote." Whatever you call it, the Wii remote communicates with the Wii console only after it is synced--that is, syncronized. The Wii remote included in the box when you purchase a Nintendo Wii system comes synced already. Most people want more than one Wiimote, though, so these additional controllers must be synced manually. Once activated, the extra Wii remotes will communicate with the Wii system. For this operation, the Wii Nunchuk should not be connected to the Wiimote.

Instructions

    • 1

Remove the jacket from the Wii remote.

    • 2

Press the "Power" button located on the upper left corner of your Wii remote. The button is round with a red circular icon on it.

    • 3

Turn over the Wiimote, then take off the battery cover.

    • 4

Locate the red button inside the battery compartment, which is the "Sync" button.

    • 5

Press the "Sync" button. On the front of the Wiimote, you'll see four blue, flashing LED lights.

    • 6

Open the SD card slot door on the Wii console. It is located between the "Eject" and "Reset" buttons.

    • 7

Press the red, rectangular "Sync" button you'll find upon opening the SD card slot door.

    • 8

Wait for the LED lights on the Wiimote to stop flashing. One light will continue to shine, indicating the player number of the Wiimote.
