How to Hook Up the Second Wii Controller

Hooking up a second Wii Remote to the Wii console is not a difficult task, regardless of whether you are connecting the remote in "Standard Mode," which connects controllers for regular, long term use, or in "One Time Mode." "One Time Mode" is appropriate for short term situations, such as if a friend brings over a controller that is normally connected to a different Wii console. This process is commonly referred to as synchronizing or "syncing" your Wii Remotes.

Instructions

  1. Standard Mode

    • 1

Put 2 AA batteries in the Wii Remote that you want to connect to the console. Leave the battery cover off.

    • 2

Turn on the Wii console using the Wii Remote that is already connected or by pressing the power button on the front of the console.

    • 3

Open the flap on the front of the Wii console left of the disc slot. There will be a red button labeled "sync" along a slot for an SD card.

    • 4

Press the "sync" button on the Wii console.

    • 5

Press the red button under the battery cover on the Wii Remote next to the batteries. The lights on the front of the remote will blink while it searches for your Wii. When the flashing ends and the second light remains lit, the controller is synchronized as the second controller.

    One Time Mode

    • 6

Put batteries in the Wii Remote that you want to connect to the Wii console.

    • 7

Turn on your Wii console and television.

    • 8

Hit the "Home" button on a Wii Remote that is already connected to the console. It is the small, circular button with a picture of a blue house at the center of the remote.

    • 9

Select "Reconnect" at the bottom of the Home screen that comes up on your television screen.

    • 10

Press the "1" and "2" buttons of the remote that you want to connect to the Wii console at the same time. Do the same for any other controllers that you want to connect. The order in which you choose to connect each controller determines the order of the controllers. For example, if there is one Wii Remote already connected to the console, the first controller that you push "1" and "2" on would be the controller for player 2 and the second controller that you press "1" and "2" on would be player 3.

When the flashing subsides and one color remains illuminated, the controller is connected.
