How to Hook Up a Wii Controller

The seventh generation consoles, the Nintendo Wii, the XBox 360 and the Playstation 3, all feature wireless controllers as a matter of course, as opposed to the previous generations of consoles which featured wired controllers or special, non-standard wireless controllers. Since Wii controllers, called Wii Remotes, are wireless, they can't simply be "plugged in" to work like the controllers before it. Wii Remotes can be synchronized either in "Standard Mode" for long term synchronization or "One Time Mode."

Instructions

  1. Standard Mode

    • 1

      Turn on the Wii console.

    • 2

Flip open the SD card slot on the front of the console, left of the disc slot.

    • 3

Remove the battery cover from the back of the Wii Remote.

    • 4

Press the button labeled "Sync" in the SD card slot and then the red button under the battery cover on the Wii Remote.

    • 5

Close the SD card slot flap and and replace the battery cover on the back of the Wii Remote. When the blinking on the bottom of the Wii Remote stops and a light remains lit, the controller is connected.

    One Time Mode

    • 6

      Turn on the Wii console.

    • 7

Press the button with a house on it on the middle of the face of a Wii Remote that is already connected to the Wii console. This is the "Home" button.

    • 8

Select the option labeled "Wii Remote Settings." This option is at the bottom of the screen, under the Wii Remote battery displays.

    • 9

Select "Reconnect" near the bottom of the screen.

    • 10

Press "1" and "2" simultaneously on the remote that you want to connect to the console. When the blinking the bottom of the Wii Remote ends a and light remains lit, the controller is connected.
