How to Connect a Wii Keyboard

The Nintendo Wii game console was made to work without a keyboard. There are times, however, when the gamer must enter text to access a website in the web browser or for turning on game features and settings. No keyboard is made specifically for the Nintendo Wii, but a standard USB keyboard can be adapted for use, once a system update has been activated to accept a keyboard. Using a keyboard on the Nintendo Wii will not damage it or affect the warranty.

Turn the Nintendo Wii on and wait for the Home menu screen to appear. Go to "Wii Options", then "Wii Settings", and maneuver to the "Wii System Update" by pressing the right arrow on the screen until "Wii System Update" shows on the screen. Press the "Yes" button and wait as the Nintendo Wii downloads and installs the Wii system update from its connection to the Internet through the wireless home network.

Wait for the Nintendo Wii to restart and return to the Home menu screen. Turn the Wii off. Plug the USB cable from a USB keyboard into one of the two USB ports on the back of the Nintendo Wii.

Turn the Nintendo Wii on. Select the Opera web browser's icon on the Home menu screen and then press "Start" in the new window that appears to load the Opera web browser.

Use the Wii remote to select "Web address" from the Opera web browser screen. Ignore the onscreen keyboard that appears and start typing on the USB keyboard. The address bar of the Opera web browser will now fill in with the text that you have typed on the USB keyboard.
