How to Mod the Wii Board

The Nintendo Wii̵7;s popularity has led to owners wanting it to do more things than were built into the operating system. Modifying or ̶0;modding̶1; the Nintendo Wii to allow for more options is done by adding a special computer chip to the Wii̵7;s circuit board. This installation can be made less intrusive by using a special solderless chip that doesn̵7;t require any alterations to the Wii̵7;s circuit board. Modding the Wii will let you do things that are not illegal, although not sanctioned by Nintendo.

Put the towel on a table. Remove all of the cables connected to the Nintendo Wii and put it face up on the towel. Pull off the controller port door by pushing it inward and wiggling it free. Pull off the memory card doors in the same way as the controller port door.

    • 2

Turn the console upside down and put it on the towel. Use the flat-edged screwdriver to dislodge the two plastic feet. Pull the plastic feet off. Use the utility knife to remove the two paper feet. Discard any paper residue. Use the torx screwdriver to remove the screws that were covered by the plastic and paper feet. Use the flat-edged screwdriver to remove the plastic foot on the side of the Wii with the serial number. Remove the paper foot from the same side using the utility knife. Unscrew the battery compartment with the Phillips screwdriver. Remove the battery compartment and take out the battery.

    • 3

Use the Phillips screwdriver to remove the black screw that was under the plastic foot. Remove the screw that was under the paper foot with the Phillips screwdriver. Remove the screw from inside the battery compartment with the torx screwdriver.

    • 4

Turn the Wii so that the controller ports are facing you. Use the Phillips screwdriver to remove the three black screws, starting with the ones at the the upper left and then at the middle and finally the one at the upper right. Remove the faceplate that is now free and lay it down in front of the Wii on the towel. Unplug the connector coming from the faceplate from the Wii by pulling it out slowly. Rock the controller port side with your hand and pull of the black controller port cover. Remove the screws underneath the black controller port cover using the torx screwdriver. Grasp the top cover from both sides and pull it straight off.

    • 5

Locate the DVD drive and remove the screws from around it using the Phillips screwdriver. Lift the DVD drive up. Remove the power connector from the back of the DVD drive by pulling it straight out.

    • 6

Remove the ribbon cable going from the DVD drive to the circuit board by unhinging the clasp on the circuit board with your fingernail and then pulling the ribbon cable out. Put the DVD drive aside.

    Putting In the Solderless Chip

    • 7

Find the version of the Wii that you have by locating the two computer chips sitting side by side. Copy down the number that is written on the smaller chip. This number will determine which solderless mod chip to use.

    • 8

Place the solderless mod chip next to the smaller computer chip on the circuit board. Attach the ribbon cable from the solderless mod clip to the connector on the circuit board with the clasp. Close the clasp after the ribbon cable has been pushed into the circuit board connector.

    • 9

Attach the ribbon connector from the DVD drive to the connector on the solderless mod chip. Connect the power cable back into the DVD drive.

    • 10

Reattach the DVD drive to the Wii. Reassemble the Wii.

    • 11

Reattach the cables to the Wii. Turn the Wii on and follow the menu prompts to install the new start-up process that the Wii's operating system will use now that it has been modified.
