How to Determine a Wii Drive Version

Nintendo's Wii console, first released in November 2006, has become an intensely popular gaming console. Over time, Nintendo has placed new drive chip versions in its Wiis for any assortment of reasons, including manufacturing deals and distribution to different countries. Unfortunately, there's no way to find your Wii's drive version using the software. This information can only be obtained by taking a look at the Wii's processor. While a slightly risky procedure, it's not difficult to perform.

Instructions

    • 1

Open the Wii's case by using your screwdriver on the single screw located on the bottom of the Wii (the same side that displays the Wii's serial number). You can then take off the top part of the Wii case.

    • 2

Find your Wii's drive version on the Wii drive processor. There will be three black squares on the Wii drive; the processor will be the middle-sized square. The model number on the square is the first line starting with "GC2" or "GC2R" and ending with either "D2A," "DMS," "D2B," "D2C" or "D2E."

    • 3

Write down the drive version and place it in an easily accessible location. For example, you can write the driver version on a Post-it note and attach it to the Wii.

    • 4

Reattach the top part of the Wii case.
