How to Connect a Wii to DSL

Connecting your Nintendo Wii gaming console to the Internet allows for automatic system updates, game downloads, and Internet gaming. Unfortunately, Nintendo has reported compatibility issues with connections to DSL modems. To avoid these issues, Nintendo recommends running your DSL through a wired or wireless router before connecting to your Nintendo Wii. Nintendo Wii supports both wired and wireless Internet connections, although to make a wired connection you must purchase a LAN adapter.

Instructions

Connect your DSL Internet connection to a wireless or wired router. If using a wireless router, the Nintendo Wii will easily detect the signal and setup will require no additional equipment. If using a wired router, purchase a LAN adapter from the Nintendo online store or a Nintendo product dealer. Third-party LAN adapters are available at most electronics stores, but Nintendo warns that compatibility issues may arise. To connect the LAN adapter, run the Ethernet cable from your router to the adapter, then insert the LAN adapter into the USB port on the rear of the Wii console. This setup will complete your Internet connection to the Wii.

Turn on the power to your Nintendo Wii gaming console. Using your Wii remote, point and click on the "Wii" button at the bottom left of your main menu screen. The button is identifiable by a small circle with "Wii" written inside. This button will take you to the Wii settings menu. After selecting this button, you will be given a choice to select on "Data Management" or "Settings." Click on "Settings." Scroll to the second page of the settings features until you see "Internet." This will appear on the same page as "Parental Controls," "Sensor Bar" and "WiiConnect24."

    • 3

Select the "Internet" option. At this point, you will be asked to select between "Connection Settings" and "Console Settings." Select "Connection Settings." The next screen will show any previous Internet connection that you have set up on your Wii gaming console, and whether they were classified wired or wireless connections. If you assigned a specific name to those previous connections, that will show as well. If this is your first time connecting your Wii to an Internet connection, all three saved Internet settings will be empty. Select which connection you wish to save your current Internet connection settings to; it does not matter where you save your settings as long as the slot is empty.

Identify your Internet connection as "Wired" or "Wireless" and give your connection a name if you desire. Naming a connection is not required, but it may be useful if you travel with your Nintendo Wii or use multiple Internet sources.

    • 5

Save your Internet connection information. If a password is required to access your network, the Wii will ask you to input this password. Once this is completed, you will be given the option to run an Internet connection test.
