How to Downgrade a Wii System Menu From 4 to 3.4

The Nintendo Wii is like a home computer and owners have the benefit of free upgrades to the system every 6 months or so. While the updates feature benefits and extras for Wii owners, older operating systems may be compatible with older SD cards, Wii saves and the infamous "Homebrew Channel." The process to downgrade to an older system is easy, and you can complete it within an hour.

Things You'll Need

  • Wireless Internet connection
  • Wii remote
  • SD card
  • Copy of "Zelda: Twilight Princess"

Instructions

    • 1

Install the Wii Twilight hack onto your system. This is a multistep process that requires the "Zelda Twlight" game, an SD card and a wireless Internet connection. Use wiibrew.org/wiki/Twilight_hack to follow and install the hack (see References).

    • 2

Load the Wii Homebrew Channel. Make sure you do not install any extra Wii updates to the computer, or the Wii Homebrew channel will become disabled and possibly be deleted from the Wii.

    • 3

Open the "Homebrew Browser." This Homebrew channel usually comes installed with the Homebrew Browser, but if that is not installed, restart the Wii, remove your SD card and install it through an SD card reader on your home computer from a supporting website (see References).

    • 4

Click on the "System" category of the Homebrew Browser. Look for the program titled "Update Downloader." Point the Wii remote to that program and press "A." Wait for the program to download completely and then exit out of the Homebrew Browser by pressing the "B" trigger button on the Wii remote.

    • 5

Reload the Homebrew Channel and find the newly installed Update Downloader. Press "A" twice to run the program.

    • 6

Press "A" on the Wii remote to skip past the welcome screen. Use the arrows to scroll through Wii system versions until you reach 3.4. Press "A" and "A" again to confirm the select. Give the program a few minutes to download and install system 3.4.

    • 7

Restart the Wii. Use the Wii remote to select the "System" icon in the bottom left of the screen. When the system menu loads, look at the top right-hand corner of the screen to see what system version the Wii is. If it says "3.4," the downgrade worked, and the Wii is now operating on the older system menu.
