How to Play Old Nintendo Games on the Wii

Nintendo has a long, illustrious history in home video console gaming, from the Nintendo Entertainment System (NES) released in 1985 to the Nintendo Wii released in 2006. While you can't play old NES games with the new motion controls of the Wii, you can play many of those classic titles such as "Super Mario Bros." and "The Legend of Zelda" through the Virtual Console download service.

Instructions

    • 1

Go to the Wii Shop Channel on the Wii Menu and press "Start."

    • 2

Select "Start Shopping." Add Wii Points if you do not have any yet. You will be directed to a screen where you can buy anywhere from 1,000 points for $10 to 5,000 points for $50. The original NES games sell for 500 points, or $5.

    • 3

Select "Virtual Console" once you have adequate points. You can browse by "Popular Titles" or "Newest Additions" or search by category or game title.

    • 4

Scroll through the listings of games and click on the ones you want to purchase. Select "Download" and the Wii will download the game onto your system.

    • 5

Press the "Home" key on your Wii remote to access the Home Menu and select "Wii Menu" to return to that opening screen.

    • 6

Find your downloaded games, which will be placed on open channels on the Wii Menu. Click on them to play the games.
