Nintendo WiFi USB Connector Help

Wii owners who wish to access the online features of their console but do not own a router for wireless connections can purchase Nintendo Wi-Fi USB Connector. This device, when inserted into a PC will act as a wireless receiver for the Wii. Setting up this device can be challenging and requires you to go between your computer and Wii to form the initial connection
  1. Compatibility

    • If you are having difficulty installing the USB connector device as well as the software, you will first need to ensure that your computer is compatible with the connector. As of December 2009, the Wi-Fi USB connector is only compatible with Windows XP and Vista. All other operations systems are unsupported. Furthermore, if you do not have a broadband Internet connection, you will not be able to make use of the connector. Check to make sure that your computer is running the compatible operating system.

    Setting Up the Connector

    • Start from the beginning of the installation process. Before you insert the USB connector into your PC, begin running the included setup software. The software will prompt you to enter your location and language. Then, when it tells you to insert the connector, do so. Check the lower right of your computer. A blue icon should appear with the word ̶0;Wi-Fi̶1; in white letters. If you do not see this icon, remove the connector, wait 30 seconds and reconnect. Once you see that the icon has appeared, click on it to continue installation.

      Power on your Wii console. It is best to have the Wii near your computer during this process. Go to the setup menu on the Wii and select ̶0;Wii Settings.̶1; Go to the second screen and click on ̶0;Internet̶1; and then select one of the three connection slots. Choose to set up a wireless connection and you'll notice that one of your options is the ̶0;Nintendo Wi-Fi USB Connector.̶1; Select it and press ̶0;Next.̶1;

      After setting up your Wii, you need to return to your computer to finish up the process. Click on the Wi-Fi icon and you'll see the name of your Wii displayed. Click on the name and a box will appear asking if you would like to grant permission to the console. Confirm that you do and your Wii will then display that the connection has been completed and run a test. If you do not grant permission, you cannot use the connector.

    Common Issues

    • If you're running into trouble with the software not recognizing the connector or not forming a link between the two, start by downloading the most recent software. Often, the software available on the included CD is dated and new updates have been released. Check for links to the most recent updates.

      For users who also own a wireless router, you might run into conflicts between the two devices. First attempt to connect with the router, otherwise you might need to disable your router while the USB connector is running.
