How to Connect the Wii Video Component Adapter

To get the highest quality picture from a Nintendo Wii, you need a high definition (HD) television and Wii-compatible component video cable. The Wii doesn't output a true HD picture, but it will certainly look as good as it possibly can with a properly configured 480p widescreen signal on an HD set.

Things You'll Need

  • HD television with component inputs
  • Wii-compatible component cable

Instructions

  1. Hook up the Wii

    • 1

Turn off and unplug both the Wii and the television.

    • 2

Unplug the standard composite (yellow/red/white) cable from the back of the Wii and the television.

    • 3

Plug the component cable into your television. It should be separated into two cable sets at the end, a video set (red/green/blue) and an audio set (red/white). Be careful to not confuse the red video and audio cables when matching the colors with the ports on the back of your TV.

    • 4

Plug the other end of the cable into your Nintendo Wii.

    • 5

Turn on the Wii and the television, and switch the television's input to component. It may also be called DVD player, but it will not be called HDMI, digital, VGA, monitor, or DVI. If you don't see a picture, double check all your connections and make sure they are in the proper matching color.

    Configure the Wii

    • 6

Go to the main Wii menu and click on the "Wii" button in the bottom left. (The Wii may already have a picture being displayed, but it probably isn't outputting a true 480p widescreen picture.)

    • 7

Click on "Wii Settings," and then click on "Screen."

    • 8

Click "TV Resolution," select "EDTV or HDTV (480p)," and click "Confirm."

    • 9

Click "Widescreen Settings," select "Widescreen (16:9)" and press "Confirm" to change your Wii to output in widescreen.
