About the Wii
The Nintendo Wii is a console that has pushed gaming to a new level that includes interactive motion controls and a pick-up-and-play game design. The Nintendo Wii is arguably the most family-friendly console on the market.
Nintendo Wii Games
Of course, what would a console be if it couldn't play its own games? The Nintendo Wii is compatible with all Nintendo Wii games. You can recognize games made for the Nintendo Wii by the Wii logo located on the top-right corner of the game's cover art. The game cases are usually white, as well.
Always make sure that any game you're buying for the Wii is licensed by Nintendo.
Nintendo Gamecube Games
What is arguably the greatest perk of owning a Wii is its compatibility with your entire library of Gamecube games. While you will be needing a Gamecube controller in order to play your old Gamecube titles, you can't beat the convenience of being able to keep all of your old favorites around such as Super Mario Sunshine, The Legend of Zelda: Wind Waker and F-Zero GX.
Classic Games Via Virtual Console
Nintendo offers all Wii owners access to its Virtual Console, a place to download classic Nintendo titles for a number of consoles including the NES, SNES and Nintendo 64. Some fan favorites such as The Legend of Zelda: A Link to the Past and Super Mario 64 all make an appearance on the Virtual Console, so there's surely something for everyone.
Along with this, you can also download several titles from other, non-Nintendo consoles like the Sega Genesis and the Commodore 64. Invest in the Wii Classic controller if you plan on downloading a lot of titles off the Virtual Console.
Prices vary from game to game, so be sure to look before buying.
What Wii Won't Play
Unfortunately, the Nintendo Wii can't play everything. PlayStation game discs, Xbox game discs and game discs from consoles other than the Wii and Nintendo Gamecube.
Along with this, the Wii cannot play DVDs, BluRay discs, HD-DVDs or CDs. There are ways to mod your console to play some of these formats, but this is not recommended as it could void your console's warranty.
