Wii Hardware Problems

Although failure rates for the Nintendo Wii console are low, especially compared to competitors like the Microsoft Xbox 360, the hardware may have some problems from time to time, as with any electronic device. Occasionally, these issues may be remedied with some simple troubleshooting steps.
  1. Hardware Warranty

    • The standard warranty from Nintendo of America grants the original purchaser a repair or replacement if the Wii has hardware problems for 12 months from the purchase date. Contact Nintendo at (800) 255-3700 for assistance.

    Console Power LED

    • Sometimes the power light will not come on or can go off during game play. Make sure the AC adapter is fully plugged into both the back of the Wii console and the wall outlet. If the cord is connected and the light is not on, try disconnecting it from the wall outlet. Wait 2 minutes before plugging it back in and then turn on the console.

No Picture or Poor Sound Quality

    • This often is not a hardware issue but is, instead, the result of an incorrect connection to the television. Make sure you have plugged the audio and video cables into the correct slots on the TV.

    Overheating

    • You can prevent the Wii console from overheating by keeping it in an area with plenty of ventilation and away from other heat-producing devices, such as DVD players or other gaming consoles.

    Wii Remote Problems

    • Make sure that the Wii remote has been synched with the console by pressing the red button under the battery cover on the remote and the accompanying red button on the front of the console. Also check to ensure that nothing is blocking the signal between the remote and the sensor bar on top of the television.

    Wii Remote Buttons Stick

    • If you have this problem, dip a toothbrush in hot water and scrub around the sticking buttons. Let the controller dry for at least 2 hours before using.
