Troubleshooting Help for a Wii

The Nintendo Wii is fun for all ages but when it's not working correctly, it's not too fun. Despite a fairly strong reliability record, some Wiis will experience technical problems. However, before sending your Wii to the repair shop, try a few of these troubleshooting tips to see if you can fix the problem yourself.
  1. No Power

    • If your Wii has no power, try unplugging the Wii AC adapter, at both ends, for two minutes. Make sure none of the power cords or cables are damaged or frayed. While the Wii is unplugged, remove all accessories such as games discs, sensor bars or anything that still is plugged into the console itself. After the two minutes, plug the console directly into a wall outlet. If the power comes on, start to plug in the accessories one at a time and see if the power is still on. If you still have no power, make sure the Wii console is properly ventilated and that there is no dust buildup on the vents.

    Blank Screen

    • Check to see if the Wii console has all its cords plugged in. This includes the power and red, white and yellow AV cord. Make sure the TV is on the right channel and that the desired game is in the console. Check all the input selections on the TV itself.

    Wii Remote Not Working

    • Check the batteries or, if you use a charger, make sure the remote is fully charged. Try unplugging the Wii sensor bar and plugging it back in. If the Wii nunchuk doesn't work, make sure it is fully plugged into the Wii remote. Also be sure nothing is blocking the Wii sensor. If the Wii remote is not syncing with the console, unplug the console for a few seconds and plug it back in. Push the power button and when the "health and safety" screen appears, open the panel on the front of the Wii console and push the red "sync" button for 15 seconds. After this is done, you can re-sync the Wii remotes.

    Game Won't Play

    • Make sure the game disc was inserted the correct way. Check to see if the game disc is damaged or scratched. Wipe the game disc with a soft cloth in a straight line; do not use circular motions. Unplug the Wii console's AC adapter, let it sit for a few seconds, plug it back it and try again.

    Repair Specialists

    • If you've tried all of the above the steps and are still experiencing problems, either contact Nintendo customer service (see Resources) or a business that repairs Wiis.
