When Was the Nintendo Wii Introduced?

The Wii is a best-selling video game console created by Nintendo, which has been in the industry since 1985. The system sold out upon its release, but it has interested the public since the concept was first announced.

Conception
- Work on the Wii began as early as 2000, before the release of their previous console (the Gamecube). Nintendo's plans for the console were announced in 2004.
Technology
- The new technology revealed in early discussions of what would become the Wii revealed not only wireless controllers, but controllers that were motion sensitive, allowing for intuitive game play.
Name
- One of the first names chosen for Nintendo's new system was the Revolution, to emphasize the use of new technology. However, Nintendo wanted to market it as a worldwide system with a name that could be pronounced in any language.
"Wii"
- The Wii was meant to be a family system that everyone could enjoy, so in early 2006 Nintendo chose a name that sounds like the English word "we" to signify togetherness.
Release
- The Nintendo Wii was finally released for sale to the public with the name and look we know today in 2006.
