What is a Wii LAN Adapter?

Though the Nintendo Wii is designed to connect to the Internet wirelessly, many gamers only have access to wired connections. Nintendo has released a LAN Adapter that allows the Wii to connect to the Internet through a wired connection.
  1. Function

    • Users plug an Ethernet cable from a router or modem into the Ethernet port on the back of the adapter. The adapter is then plugged into one of the two USB ports on the back of the Wii.

    Benefits

    • The LAN adapter allows gamers who do not have a wireless router to connect a Wii to the Internet. The adapter provides a connection alternative to the discontinued Nintendo Wi-Fi USB connector.

    Considerations

    • Most DSL modems are incompatible with the adapter, so DSL users must invest in a router. The adapter also will not work with ISPs who require a sign-in every time a user connects online. Dial-up connections are usually incompatible with the adapter.

    History

    • The Wii LAN adapter became the default option for connecting the Wii to a wired Internet connection after the Nintendo Wi-Fi USB connector was discontinued following a lawsuit by Australian company CSIRO.

    Availability

    • The official Wii LAN adapter is only available through Nintendo's website, but third-party adapters are available through other online merchants.
