About the Nintendo Wii Game System

After minor success with the Gamecube, console developer Nintendo followed up with the Wii. The system eschewed the visual prowess touted by the Playstation 3 and Xbox 360, instead focusing on how games are played. The name of the console is a homonym of the word "we" and represents the social aspect of the Wii. The console has been praised for introducing gaming to a larger audience, while other gamers criticize the lack of games aimed at longtime fans of the hobby.
  1. Release

    • The Nintendo Wii was released on November 19, 2006. Packed with each console was Wii Sports, a game that mimics sporting events such as bowling, tennis, boxing and baseball.

    All About Control

    • In lieu of standard controllers, the Wii developed and implemented motion sensing technology in their Wii Remotes. Gestures made with the remotes are registered by the game and are used to cause actions to occur.

    The Games

    • The Wii has been home to several entries in several popular Nintendo franchises. New versions of The Legend of Zelda, Mario, Smash Brothers and Metroid have all been released to critical and commercial success.

    Old School

    • The Wii features an online store where classic console games can be downloaded, as well as games by smaller developers. These classic games originated on previous Nintendo home consoles as well as Sega Genesis, Turbo Grafx, and Neo Geo.

    Success

    • The Wii has sold 50 million units as of March 2009. As of the end of 2008, the most successful game on the system has been Wii Play, selling 20 million copies.
