Get Set Up to Play Guitar Hero on the Wii
Learn where the buttons are and what they do. The joystick on the upper-left portion of the guitar's body is used to guide the hand on the main menu of the Wii to start the game. On the neck of the guitar, you will find the green, red, yellow, blue and orange buttons used for game play. The green button is used as the "A" button when not playing a song, and the red button is used as the "B" button to scroll backwards through game menus. The long, skinny bar in the middle of the guitar allows the user to scroll up and down on game menus and for simulated guitar pick strokes. The silver bar changes note pitch during songs. The black "-" button starts "Star Power" and the black "+" button pauses the game during songs.
Add the guitar strap to the guitar, with one end attached at the right side of the guitar's body and the other end attached to the left side. Slide the end of the knob through the slit at the end of the strap. Adjust the length of the strap by moving the plastic bar along the strap.
Insert the Wii-mote into the back of the guitar controller. Turn the guitar face-down and take off the compartment plate. You will notice a fake remote in the guitar when you pull it out of the box for the first time. Plug the cord in the back of the guitar into the back of the Wii-mote. Place the Wii-mote face-down in the compartment, sliding the end with the cable in first. Lay the wrist strap in the open area beside the Wii-mote. Replace the cover.
Turn the game on by pressing the power button on the Wii-mote. You can install the Wii-mote with the power on as long as the Wii-mote only has one blue LED light showing. Put the "Guitar Hero" game in the Wii.
Use the joystick to move the hand on the screen to the game icon and press the green button on the guitar to go to the game.
Watch the initial screens of companies responsible for the game or skip through them by pressing the green button until you get to the main menu. The main menu list is: CAREER, CO-OP CAREER, QUICKPLAY, MULTIPLAYER, TRAINING, OPTIONS and NINTENDO WFC.
Move the pick bar up and/or down to highlight your selection. Choose CAREER to start a new game to work your way through the songs. Name your band by using the pick bar to move letters up and down. Press the green button to select the letters in your band's name. Press the black "+" button when you finish naming your band.
Choose the difficulty for your band. If you have never played "Guitar Hero" before, choose the "easy" option by highlighting it and pressing the green button.
Choose the character to play guitar in your band by sorting through the available pictures. You can also change the guitar and the outfit if you like.
Select the "Play Show" option, and then choose a venue for your show. First-time players have to choose the "Backyard Bash" as the first venue.
Play a Guitar Hero Song on the Wii
Choose the song you want to play from the list on the screen by using the pick bar to highlight the song and the green button to select it.
Position your left hand so you can press the green button with your forefinger, the red button with your middle finger, the yellow button with your ring finger and blue button with your pinky finger. Don't worry about the orange button, as you will have plenty of experience playing before you need to use it.
Grip the pick bar with the forefinger and thumb of your right hand on either side of it.
Watch the middle of the screen for circular notes moving down a virtual fretboard. You will notice five stationary circles near the bottom of the screen that are green, red, yellow, blue and orange, corresponding with the button colors on the guitar's neck. Notes moving down the screen are color coordinated with the circles and guitar buttons to let you know which button to press. For example, when you see a green circle moving down the screen, you need to be ready to press the green button at the right time.
Hold down the appropriate button(s), and stroke the pick bar up or down at the same time the colored note reaches the stationary circle toward the bottom of the screen. Timing is imperative. If you don't hit the pick bar at the right time, you miss the note. Likewise, if you don't have the proper button(s) pressed, you miss the note.
Hold the button(s) down when you see a long line following the note to play a sustained note. You can use your right hand to move the silver whammy bar up and down to change the pitch of the sustained note.
Look for notes with stars instead of circles around the colored note. Play all of the star notes in a group to boost your "star power" meter. When the meter, which is located above the crowd's applause meter, is blue, you can enable star power to increase note value and get the crowd into the song. Turn star power on by lifting the guitar into a vertical position or pressing the "-" button (harder to do when playing).
Watch for notes you can play without using the pick bar. These notes have a taller white section at the top of the note, without the black circle, to show you can "hammer-on" or "pull-off" to play the note. You have to pick the preceding note before pressing these special button(s). This technique becomes more important as the game progresses.
Complete the song by keeping the crowd's applause meter from dropping to the bottom, resulting in the end of the song and a small tantrum thrown by your guitarist. At the end of the song, you will see the percentage of notes you played, the longest streak of notes played in succession and a numeric score. In addition, you get paid when you complete each song.
