How to Play Burned Wii Games

Wii video games are expensive. The best way to protect your investment is to make backup copies of your games. The only problem is, you can't play burned Wii games on a standard, out-of-the-box Wii console. You will have to make a modification to the chip on the Wii system board to play burned Wii games. If you aren't comfortable stripping your Wii down to the system board and soldering new equipment onto it, be extra careful with how you treat your game discs so you don't have to replace them in the future.

Instructions

    • 1

Disconnect the power supply and other cables from the Wii.

    • 2

Remove the footpads and screws from the rear of the unit. Pull out the small battery tray. Put the battery tray and the screws in a safe place, like in a cup on the table. Remove the stickers and additional footpads, and open the doors to find the other screws you need to remove.

    • 3

Slide the faceplate off the unit with care. A cable connects the faceplate to the system board and can be damaged if you jerk the faceplate off the unit. Disconnect the cable from the system board and set it to the side.

    • 4

Take off the plate near the Gamecube sockets and remove the exposed screws.

    • 5

Position the Wii on its side with the Nintendo logo facing you. Use a little force to remove the right-side cover. If the cover doesn't budge, look for screws you didn't remove. Take off the four screws holding the DVD reader in place on the unit.

    • 6

Disconnect the power supply and the ribbon cable attaching the DVD reader to the system board. You need to lift the catch-arm on the ribbon cable. Use great care with these cables and the catch-arm, because if something breaks, the Wii is out of commission.

    • 7

Look for a large black square, which is a chip, with a few letters on it. Write the letters down so you can order the proper chip for your particular system board. The letters may be dms, d2a, d2b or something similar.

    • 8

Buy a mod chip known to work as a replacement for the chip in your unit.

    • 9

Use the soldering iron to remove the current chip. You may be able to remove a portion of the system board to replace the chip, or you may have to remove the chip from the board itself, depending on your unit. Use flux and iron to disconnect the chip with great care.

    • 10

Attach the new chip to the system board by using the solder to establish the connections with the board in the same way the old chip was connected.

    • 11

Attach the two cables for the DVD reader and the screws holding the reader in place. Be sure you put the catch-arm back in place to hold the ribbon cable when you attach the DVD cables.

    • 12

Add the covers, faceplates and footpads to the unit, using the appropriate screws removed from the unit during disassembly.
