Description
In the ranged weapons category, crossbows are slower but more powerful than traditional bows. Because of their increased strength, crossbows cannot fire standard arrows and instead use shorter, heavier bolts. Karil's Crossbow is the only weapon to use bolt racks, which stack bolts for faster launching.
Crossbow Acquisition
Obtaining Karil's Crossbow requires completing the Barrows mini-game in World 15. You will need to defeat Karil and his six brothers in combat, exploiting each of the brothers' unique weaknesses. Karil, in particular, is vulnerable to stabbing attacks. Being victorious in combat earns the chance to open a reward chest, possibly resulting in winning the crossbow.
Bolt Rack Acquisition
Acquiring bolt rack ammunition for Karil's Crossbow may be done one of two ways. First, you may win bolt racks from opening the Barrows reward chest. Second, you may purchase bolt racks from the trader Ak-Haranu in Port Phasmatys, a members-only town that costs 25 ecto-tokens to enter. Free players may gain access to Port Phasmatys by completing the Ghosts Ahoy quest. Bolt racks cost approximately 420 coins and may be traded.
Benefits
Karil's Crossbow packs a serious punch, delivering a significant ranged attack bonus to go along with an 892 damage rating and a 1486 accuracy rating. When used while wearing the other elements of Karil's armor set, the crossbow's bolt racks lower your victim's agility by 20 percent. Because it cannot be purchased, but must be won as a reward, Karil's Crossbow also fetches a significant price when sold or traded on the open market.
Considerations
Karil's Crossbow is a powerful weapon, but that power comes with a price. While other crossbows allow for one-handed operation, Karil's crossbow requires two hands to fire. Using the second hand means your character cannot hold a shield when using the weapon, resulting in increased vulnerability to counter attacks.
