External Speaker Settings
One of the most common and easily fixed errors involves the placement and volume of external speakers. External speakers located too close to your microphone will transmit the sounds of your game, along with your voice, whenever you speak through ̶0;Ventrilo.̶1; If the speakers are loud enough, this may drown out your voice entirely. You can turn down your external speakers or use a headset device to prevent this occurrence. Standalone microphones that are not part of a headset combination should have noise-cancelling features that reduce or eliminate transmission of background noise when employed alongside external speakers.
Incorrect Recording Device
̶0;Ventrilo̶1; features a wide array of specialized settings that allow you to set the recording device, mixer and other input functions of the software. This permits transmission of pre-recorded sounds and other uses for the software beyond standard voice transmission. Incorrect settings may send information from another recording device through the system, resulting in game sound transmission. You should always verify your recording device in the ̶0;Ventrilo̶1; settings menu when joining a new server or installing the program for the first time. The recording device should match the name of your microphone or headset. If a generic microphone or headset is listed, the correct device normally shows your sound card as the device̵7;s name.
Software Conflicts
Some software may automatically change your recording device or overwrite other ̶0;Ventrilo̶1; settings. These programs are typically related to recording games or making modifications to sound transmission. Video game recording software may change the default settings in your operating system to recognize their line-in access as the primary setting. Voice changing programs, commonly used in online role-playing games or video creation tools, may redirect all sounds through their mixer programs prior to transmission. These programs may misidentify your game sounds as the desired transmission source. You can manually reset your recording device to correct many of these errors. If this does not work, try contacting the manufacturer of the interfering software program for additional assistance.
Other Possibilities
Sometimes, other problems may creep into your system that cause game sounds to transmit through your ̶0;Ventrilo̶1; setup. Outdated drivers can cause your sound card to misidentify sound channels, and outside sources can cause wireless interference when using a wireless headset. This is fairly common when using wireless speakers and a wireless microphone or headset, especially if the two sources use the same technology or operate on similar frequencies. Some speakers and microphones of this type allow manual changes to the frequency settings. Check your hardware manuals to help troubleshoot wireless interference or simultaneous frequency issues.
