Stay Small
If you're having a difficult time defeating some of the larger spaceships, minimize the size of your ship rather than trying to make it bigger. Small ships are able to position themselves more easily between the weapons on the larger ships, which keeps them out of the line of fire. Add plenty of weapons to the front and sides of your ship to inflict maximum damage while avoiding being hit by enemy attacks.
Start Strong
When beginning gameplay, it may seem tempting to try and hold on to every piece of your disassembled spaceship. What you need to do, however, is let go of all the green parts. Keep only one engine and place it onto the back of your pod to give yourself the best start in the game.
Colors Matter
Just as you want to ignore the green spaceship parts in the beginning of the game, you'll also want to ignore the green enemy spaceships, as their parts aren't worth much. Focus your efforts on hunting down yellow and orange ships -- particularly if you see ships with either red or purple guns and engines. These red and purple spaceship components will give you the best defense system and speed in the game.
Redo
If your spaceship isn't flying as well as you'd like, start over by unsnapping every part except a single pod, a powerful engine and a purple gun. This will give you the speed and weaponry you need, while allowing you to rebuild your ship in the middle of gameplay. Because spaceship parts can be simply snapped or unsnapped from the body of the ship with just the click of a button, there's no reason to start the game over again if you make a mistake.
