How Much Memory Does Lotro Take Up?

The Lord of the Rings Online, or LOTRO, is an interactive video game from Warner Bros. Entertainment that requires at least 7 gigabytes of computer hard disk space, or memory, but the publisher recommends recommend 10 gigabytes. In addition to its memory requirements, the game has an assortment of other minimum and recommended requirements.
  1. RAM

    • While LOTRO has specific hard drive space requirements to work properly, it also comes with a minimum requirement of 512 megabytes of random access memory, or RAM, and a recommended requirement of 1 gigabyte of RAM. RAM is the part of your computer that stores copies of files for quick access and faster processing speeds. As RAM nears or reaches capacity, the computer̵7;s processing can become sluggish or will fail to work properly. Since shutting the computer down clears RAM, doing this prior to playing LOTRO will help your computer attain optimal processing performance and will help the game operate as it is designed.

    Operating System and Processor

    • At the time of publication, LOTRO is only compatible with Windows-based personal computers. To play the game, your computer must be running at least the Microsoft Windows XP operating system, though Windows Vista is recommended. The game requires at least a 1.8-GHz Intel Pentium 4 processor, but a 2.8-GHz Pentium 4 processor or faster is recommended. In partnership with your computer̵7;s RAM, these computer components play integral roles in how LOTRO performs during your gaming experience.

    Internet Connection

    • Although LOTRO will work with 58 kilobits per second dial-up Internet connections, it̵7;s recommended you play the game using a high-speed broadband DSL or cable connection. At the time of publication, DSL and cable connections are the most common forms of Internet connections and are available from telephone and cable TV providers, such as Verizon, AT&T and Comcast. Because of the complexity of LOTRO design, cable connections, which produce faster rates than other technology, is ideal when playing the game. In general, DSL connections transfer data at up to 15 megabits per second, cable at up to 105 Mbps and fiber optic connections, such as Verizon̵7;s FiOS, at up to 150 Mbps.

    Other Requirements

    • LOTRO requires a minimum of 64 megabytes of graphics RAM and a NVIDIA GeForce 3 or ATI Radeon 8500 video graphics processor -- though 128 megabytes of graphics RAM and a NVIDIA GeForce 6800 or ATI Radeon X850 graphics processor is recommended. You must also have the Microsoft DirectX 9.0c software application installed on your computer to play LOTRO. DirectX 9.0c helps your computer process the 3D elements of the game and to interact with other computers, which is at the heart of the game̵7;s interactivity. Lastly, LOTRO also requires a 2x DVD ROM drive if you intend to install the game̵7;s core application using a DVD disc.
