How to Make a Compass in Minecraft Beta

The compass is among the many items that you can craft using materials from your environment in the open-world adventure game "Minecraft." The only purpose of the compass is to point you toward the location on the map where your character last spawned, or appeared. You can use it by rotating your character until the needle on the compass is pointing straight up. This indicates that the spawn point lies directly ahead of your character.

Instructions

    • 1

Play the game and mine 16 blocks of cobblestone. Cobblestone is a dark gray block that looks like it is riddled with cracks. You can obtain it easily in dungeons or areas where water and lava come into contact. Hold down the left mouse button while facing a cobblestone block for your character to mine it, then walk over the block once it is mined to pick it up.

    • 2

Mine the wood from a tree trunk and then press the "I" button to open your inventory. Drag the wood blocks from the bottom of the inventory to the "Crafting" square at the top and it turns into planks.

    • 3

Drag the planks to your inventory and then drag four planks into the crafting square to get a workbench. Drag the workbench into your inventory and then press "Esc." Use the mouse wheel to cycle through your inventory. Select the work bench and right-click to place it on the floor.

    • 4

Face the workbench and right-click on it to open the crafting menu. You'll now have more crafting squares to work with and thus can create bigger and better things.

    • 5

Drag eight cobblestones from your inventory to the crafting blocks of the workbench. Fill eight of the nine blocks with cobblestones, leaving the center block empty. The result will be a furnace. Place the furnace on the floor the same way as you did the workbench.

    • 6

Mine four iron ore blocks, which are the gray ones with brown specks. You'll find these in areas on the bottom of the map up to four blocks above sea level.

    • 7

Face the furnace and right-click on it to open the smelting menu. Drag your iron blocks into the furnace block and it will be smelting iron ingots. Repeat until you have four iron ingots.

    • 8

Use an iron pickax to dig into the ground until you reach redstone blocks. These are light gray blocks with red flecks in them. Use the iron pickax on this block and you will get redstone dust from it.

    • 9

Return to your workbench. Drag the four iron ingots from your inventory to the crafting blocks and place them in the top, bottom, left and right sections. Drag the redstone dust to the middle of the crafting blocks. The result will be a compass. Drag the compass from the workbench to your inventory, from where you will be able to use it.
