Places to Find Pickaxes in RuneScape

You can use pickaxes in "RuneScape" to mine ores and gems. They are made from different kinds of metal and have different properties. Some picks are free; others you must buy from pickax shops or from the Great Exchange. You can smith some yourself. Some pickaxes are special items you can only get as a reward for completing an activity. Most picks are available to paying members only.
  1. Bronze Pickax

    • You can get the Bronze pickax free from Bob in Lumbridge. It is available as a monster drop, especially from Dwarfs and Rock Crabs. If you have a Smithing skill over level five you can smith one from two bronze bars. The Bronze pickax is the weakest pick in the game. When you use it to mine gems or ore, it is much slower than other picks. It is less powerful when you wield it as a weapon.

    Iron Pickax

    • The Iron pickax is better than the Bronze but still not the most effective pick. You can obtain it as a monster drop or smith one from two iron bars if your smith skill is over 20 and you have completed the Perils of Ice Mountain quest. You can buy this pick from Nurmof's Pickax Shop, at the rear of the Dwarf Mines. It costs 140 coins.

    Dwarven Army Ax

    • You can use the Dwarven Army Ax as a pick, a hatchet for chopping wood, a tinderbox, a chisel and a needle. You cannot smith one yourself. Moe the Miner and Larry the Lumberjack both give you this pick for free. Moe is mining tin at the Varrock west mines; Larry is chopping trees south of the Champions' Guild, a building southwest of Varrock.

    Steel Pickax

    • The Steel Pickax is similar to the Iron Pickax but stronger. You can smith one from two steel bars if you have a Smith skill over 35 and have completed Perils of Ice Mountain; this will earn you 75 Smithing experience points. You can buy the Steel pick from Nurmof's Pickax Shop in the Dwarf Mines, or from Tati's Pickaxe-Is-Mine in East Keldagrim, for 500 coins. It is dropped only rarely by monsters.

    Mithril Pickax

    • Significantly stronger and faster than other picks, you can buy the Mithril Pickax from Nurmof or Tati for 1,300 coins. You can smith one from two mithril bars if your Smithing skill level is over 55 and you have completed Perils of Ice Mountain; you get 100 Smithing experience from this. The Mithril pick is a common monster drop from the Living Rock Protector. To mine with this pick you need level 21 Mining; to wield it as a weapon you need level 20 Attack.

    Adamant Pickax

    • The Adamant pickax is stronger than the Mithril pickax. It is a common monster drop from the Living rock protector. You can buy it from Nurmof or Tati for 3200 coins. To smith one from two Adamant bars you need Smithing level 75 and to have completed the Perils of Ice Mountain quest. To mine with an Adamant pick you need a Mining level of 31 or over. To wield it as a weapon you need an Attack level of 30 or more.

    Rune Pickax

    • The Rune pickax is the strongest ax available to non-members. You can buy it from Nurmof or Tati for 32,000 coins. To smith one from two rune bars you need to have completed Perils of Ice Mountain and to have a Smithing skill of over 90. You also receive one at the end of the Between a Rock ... quest. Mining with a Rune pick requires 41 Mining. Wielding it requires 40 Attack.

    Dragon Pickax

    • The Dragon pickax is a very rare monster drop from Chaos dwarfs, Chaos dwarf hand cannoneers and Chaos dwogres on the Chaos Dwarf Battlefield. It is the fastest and strongest pick in the game. Like other picks you can buy it on the Great Exchange but the price is exorbitant. It requires level 60 Attack and level 61 Mining. You cannot smith this pick.

Sacred Clay Pickaxe and Inferno Adze

    • You can only obtain the Sacred clay pickax as a reward from the Stealing Creation activity. It grants you extra experience while mining, but crumbles into dust when its power is exhausted. You need level 40 Mining to use this pick. The Inferno Adze is a reward from the All Fired Up activity. It works like a Rune pick when mining and a Dragon hatchet when cutting wood. It requires Level 41 Mining and 92 Firemaking to use. \
