Which Is Better in RuneScape: Obby Maul or Granite Maul?

The Granite maul and the TzHaar-ket-om -- also known as the Obsidian maul, or Obby maul for short -- are large crushing weapons. The Obby maul's crushing damage bonus is a little lower than the Granite maul's, and it reduces your magical attack, but its strength bonus is higher. The Obby maul has lower requirements to use it, while the Granite maul has a special attack. You can't create the Obby or Granite maul using the Smith skill.
  1. The Obby Maul

    • You can purchase the Obby maul from the TzHaar City weapons store. It costs 75,000 Tokkul, the obsidian currency of the region. You may also obtain the Obby maul as a rare drop from TzHaar-Ket, inhabitants of TzHaar City. You need 60 Strength before you can wield this weapon. The Obby maul can be combined with a Berserker necklace to inflict 20 percent more damage.

    The Granite Maul

    • You can get the Granite maul as a drop from Gargoyles, monsters that require a Slayer skill of 75 to kill. You need Level 50 Strength and Level 50 Attack to wield this two-handed weapon. The Granite maul has a special attack called Quick Smash; you can expend 50 percent of your special attack bar to use this, instantly striking your opponent again even if you have just attacked. This lets you use the maul three times in very rapid succession -- initial hit, followed by two Quick Smash attacks -- potentially doing a great deal of damage.

    The Mauls in Combat

    • Mauls are two-handed weapons, meaning that you can't use a shield at the same time. Both mauls are somewhat slower to wield than some weapons with a similar strength bonus -- say, the Dragon battleaxe. Both the Granite and Obsidian mauls are popular with player killers. The Granite maul is used by higher level players who can take advantage of its special Quick Smash attack, while the Obby maul's lower requirements let relatively low-level characters do large amounts of damage.

    Superiority

    • Both mauls have points in their favor. The Obby maul is a good choice if your character has an Attack level under 60, allowing you to do significant amounts of damage despite having a lower Attack score. Once your character surpasses Level 60 of the Attack skill, though, other weapons are superior to the Obby maul. The Granite maul has a slightly higher Strength bonus, and its powerful Quick Smash attack can be decisive in combat.
